State Monitors: Wyandanch Union Free School District (WUFSD)
Summary
Chapter 18 of the laws of 2020, enacted on February 3, 2020, authorizes the Commissioner of Education to appoint a State Monitor to oversee the fiscal operations of the Wyandanch Union Free School District (WUFSD). This act established the powers and duties of the Fiscal State Monitor,. Mr. Albert Chase, who Ìýwas appointed on April 23, 2020.Ìý
Chapter 58 of the Laws of 2026, Part WW, enacted on January 21, 2026, authorizes the Commissioner of Education to appoint two State Monitors, one to oversee fiscal operations and the other to oversee academic progress, in the Wyandanch Union Free School District (WUFSD). This act adds academic oversight and the requirement that the district report and take public comment on the academic performance of the district to the monitor responsibilities.
Under this revised act, Dr. Lorna R. Lewis, on August 25, 2026, was appointed as theÌýnew Acadmic Monitor for the WUFSD, joining Mr. Chase, Fiscal Monitor, as the second monitor for the district.ÌýDr. Lewis’s appointment went into effect on August 31, 2026.
The monitors' combined responsibilities include:

Working with the board of education and the financial monitor to develop and update annually academic improvement and financial plans for the 2026–2027 and four succeeding school years;

Reviewing, in collaboration with the financial monitor, the district's annual proposed budget and making recommendations to the commissioner on whether the budget should be amended;
Approving or disapproving travel outside the State paid for by the district; -
Recommending cost saving measures including, but not limited to, shared service agreements.;

Assisting in resolving disputes and conflicts, including but not limited to, those between the superintendent and the board and among members of the board;

Providing in collaboration with the financial monitor semiannual reports to the Commissioner and other designated officials on the academic, fiscal and operational status of the school district;

Notifying the board and the commissioner in writing when the district is violating an element of the long-term strategic academic and fiscal improvement plan; and.

Serving as an ex-officio member of the Board of Education.
