| Description |
The Supplementary certificate is a specialized certificate used by school districts to fill a teaching assignment that is a designated shortage area. This certificate is only available if the candidate already holds a valid NYS classroom teaching certificate in one subject and now they have an offer of employment to cover this shortage area. |
| Validity | Valid for five years. The Supplementary certificate is not eligible to be extended or renewed. While the certificate is valid, the candidate must work to complete the requirements to advance to the Initial certificate (or Professional certificate). |

Note for Employers
The employer must submit a Superintendent Statement (entitled “Supplementary Certificate”) onto the candidate’s TEACH account. If the employer does not have administrative access to the TEACH system, they cannot utilize the Supplementary certificate, and the candidate will need to pursue a different type of certificate.
The Superintendent Statement must be entered during the current school year, confirming that a shortage still exists in this subject area. And when completing the statement, the employer should answer question #3 with the date the candidate will become employed under the Supplementary certificate. If a current Superintendent Statement is not present in the account, the requirement will be held deficient, and the employer would need to enter an updated one.
The School District Recommendation requirement (Superintendent Statement) will not be verified met on the application until all other requirements have been completed, as this office must ensure that the certificate is being issued specifically to address a shortage area during the current school year.
